My First Full Season in GT World Challenge

‍

Stepping into a GT3 car for a full European season is one thing. Doing it with Team WRT, one of the most decorated GT squads on the continent, is something else entirely. Here is what that first campaign taught me about racing, pressure and what it really takes to compete at the top.

‍

The pre-season test at Paul Ricard set the tone straight away. The pace of the field was sharper than anything I had experienced before. My co-driver and I spent the opening sessions simply learning the car's limits in race conditions. In a GT3 Lamborghini on slicks with full aero, that process takes every ounce of concentration you have.

What the data does not tell you

‍

Every lap in GT World Challenge is broken down to the millisecond. Your engineer knows your braking points, your throttle application, your tyre wear rate. But the data cannot capture the feeling of managing a car on the absolute limit for sixty minutes while traffic from slower classes weaves through at completely different speeds. That mental discipline is something you build through laps. Hundreds of them.

‍

Key takeaways from the season

‍

  • Consistency beats raw pace. A clean stint is worth more than a fast one with an error.
  • Communication with your co-driver and engineer shapes your result as much as your lap time does.
  • Physical conditioning is not optional at this level. My triathlon background made a genuine difference in the closing stages of long stints.
  • Every race weekend hands you something to build on, whatever the result.

‍

The season was not without its frustrations. A mechanical retirement in the opening round and a contact incident at Barcelona cost us points we had fully earned. But those moments sitting in the garage watching the race carry on without you sharpen your hunger in a way no podium ever could. We come back next season with more data, more experience and exactly the same determination.
